What Do You Get When …

What do you get when you take one home schooling mama and have her make lunch, make applesauce, occupy a toddler, help a 6th grader, and help her husband with his business all at the same time?

Give up?

One very undeniably, incomprehensible, completely, unequivocably, ruined beyond help sauce pan!

For some this might look normal, but let me reassure you this pan had not a tinge of black charcoal like substance on it when I began making the applesauce.

The pan on the left is the burned one, the pan on the right is my sparkly clean pan. They are not one in the same. I don’t think that any amount of scrubbing will get my pan clean.

Now … I want to apologize to those out there that have burned a pan while boiling water because I laughed and thought “Now that person can’t cook.” Well, today I joined the ranks of those who have burned a pan while boiling water and I can attest to the fact it is pretty easy when you have your mind on a slew of other things. Thank goodness I didn’t burn the second pan of boiling water that was going at the same time.

With some reluctance I went on to finish up the applesauce, but I wasn’t to sure of how the flavor of the apples would be affected by the charring of the pan. Let me say, I don’t want to make my applesauce like that again, but overall the flavor wasn’t too bad. In fact, my husband really liked it and said it had an outdoorsy flavor – huh? I made it in my kitchen not outside on an open fire (well maybe it was an open fire and I just didn’t know it.)

Thanks again for not laughing so loud that I could hear it, and I hope you never have to ruin a pan this way. However, if you have any suggestions on possibly salvaging this pan they would be greatly appreciated.

Let it soak with dish soap or a little while and then scrub it with a balled up piece of aluminum foil? Try it. 🙂 Balled up aluminum foil actually works wonders. It depends how far gone it is. I have been able to get most off of mine, but it takes some elbow grease. Good Luck! Glad the apple sauce turned out. Following through email now. If you’re interested, I have a hop going on this weekend! Come join us!

    • Thank you for stopping by. I missed your comment until Monday so I did not get to stop by your blog hop – bummed. Thank you for the advice for my charcoaled pan. I will try it. I will head over to your blog shortly. I love the title.

  2. So excited to try some of your recipes. Found you via bloggy moms. Looks like we have some similar interests :)!

Reluctantly, I admit that I have had some burned pots and pans. I am a new fan from Blogg Moms.

Ha, Ha. My mom used to burn things all the time. And I never burned anything… until I had kids. Oh well, I guess I am in good company. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I was going to follow you , but don’t see a place to do so. Let me know if I missed it. BTW, we don’t actually live in Cedar Hill, TX. Our place is actually closer to Round Top. I thought it was a unique name for a ranch; turns out not so much. There’s even a field in Warrneton that is completely flat called “Cedar Hill”. Oh well, now that we have our silver with the “CH” it’s too late to change the name. I will have to visit Cedar Hil, TX to check it out now.

    • I am so trying to work on how to make it easy for people to follow me. I wanted to add google friends, but I am on wordpress.com and can’t add google friends. I guess I will have to self host when I become brave enough. You can follow me on twitter @kitchenandkids, through email, and on facebook – https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kitchen-and-Kids/224072400937743. How far is round top from the DFW area? The pictures are beautiful, and the blue bonnets are fantastic – too short lived, but beautiful. Thank you for stopping by.

  5. So…for a non-cooker, the first post you don’t want to see on a cooking blog is one where the author burns something! Ha! But I love that you could have lied about not being perfect and now, I’m hooked! Thanks for your honesty! BTW, that looked like a pretty good pan (unlike the 7-piece box set I purchased from Walmart). 😉

    • I know it really doesn’t make someone confident in the cook, but I figure everyone has a failure a time or two in the kitchen even the best cooks, and I figured I better laugh at myself or I might cry. For the first seven years of my marriage I wouldn’t cook with these pans because we paid an outlandish amount of money on them and I didn’t want to ruin them. Well… 8 years later and a ton more confidence I burn it to pieces – oh well. You live and learn, and I was humbled by the experience – I will not laugh at people who burn water EVER again. Thanks bunches for stopping by.

Have you tried Bar Keeper’s Friend? It has been a equiptment saver for me.

Thanks for stopping my blog!! I wanted to tell you that although it really stinks sometimes boiling a little water and vinegar can lift burned on yucky stuff! But on the plus side, I LOVE homemade applesauce and so does my daughter.

I’m so excited to be participating in the 31dbbb program along with you! I look forward to learning more and seeing so many new people.

    • I will have to try that. I have been hesitant to do anything because quite honestly I don’t want to stink my house up again. I am also excited about the 31dbbb. This will be my second attempt to do this challenge. The last time I just got overwhelmed, since I home school my son, as well as hanging out with my daughter. With it being summer it should be easier.

Haha, that’s great! I can say that I steam cook my hard boiled eggs – using the makeshift pot and colander method – and I have been known to get distracted and come back to my water completely gone and the pot screaming for its dear life! Never did it get to that point though *laughing*. We’ve all been there…

    • I think the craziest thing about this is 1) I have never done anything like that before, and 2) I was in the same room – just extremely distracted. I can say the next time I made applesauce, I did not burn the pan. Once is enough for me. But… I am glad to know I am not alone.

  9. Micha says:

Fill the pan 3/4 full with water and add a few drops of Dawn or whatever dish soap you use. Bring that to a boil and let it sit until cool and scrub the bottom. You may have to do it a couple times.

I have a tendency to burn things with barbecue sauce no matter how careful I am because of the sugar content so I’ve ended up with pans like that many times.

    • Thank you for the suggestion. I have been woefully negligent in taking care of this burned pot – it still resides in my sink waiting for me to take care of it. Maybe this week will be the week. We will see. Thanks again. Have a great day!

I’m glad you got some tips. I’m well versed in the fact that a blackened pan that may look like it won’t scrub up well again ever, will, in fact, with a little elbow grease and a few more heatings. When I burn a pan, my husband tends to throw up his hands and go buy another but I have, hand on heart, reached into our trash can and pulled out a pan he has thrown away and that looks beyond redemption and had it as good as new (well, almost) in a few minutes.

    • I am very glad to know there is a success story out there. I am sure my beloved and well missed pan will scrub up once I get the gumption to do it. Maybe tomorrow or the next day or the next day…

  11. Oh, even the most veteran of us have had this happen to us! And, The Mister has said the same thing to me about the outdoorsy taste when I’ve burnt something.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I need to join the SITSGirls31DBBB foodie group!

I am afraid I have to own up to laughing a little, it is always funny when it happens to someone else! Out doorsy flavour, oh bless him 🙂 (Sitsgirls31DBBB)

    • I have to admit it made me feel a little bit better, but the next time I made applesauce we left off the outdoorsy flavor. I think the Little Miss liked it better that way.
